Day 1: Depart the U.S. (or your home country)
Leave on your overnight flight for Buenos Aires (we offer air credit
if you arrange your own flights).
Day 2: Buenos Aires
Morning arrival. Transfer to your hotel. Rest of the day at your leisure. [B/D]
Day 3: Buenos Aires-Ushuaia-Embarkation
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Ushuaia. Orientation tour upon arrival. Embark on the MS Nordnorge. [B/D]
Days 4-5: At Sea
During the sail to the Falkland Islands, you will enjoy lectures about the wildlife and history of this archipelago of 700 islands. [B/L/D]
Days 5-6: West Falkland Islands-Islas Malvinas
After a day's sail, you reach the westernmost settled outposts in the Falklands. The sheep graze alongside immense colonies of albatross and rockhopper, king and macaroni penguins. A visit to one of these homesteads often includes an invitation for a cup of tea and a chance to meet those who have chosen to live on the edge of Antarctica.
Day 7: Stanley
The ship will call at Stanley, the capital of the Falklands. The port was chosen for its inner and outer harbors, and nearness to the island's peat beds. Explore the town on your own or take a guided tour. Optional excursions. [B/L/D]
Day 8-9: At Sea
While at sea, you'll be diverted by lectures about Antarctica's extraordinary history and unique beauty. You'll learn about its abundant wildlife and about ice. [B/L/D]
Days 10-14: Antarctica
The ship will negotiate the narrow passage between Booth Island and the Antarctic Peninsula, known as the Lemaire Channel, named ironically for the Belgian explorer of the Congo. You'll be awed by the majesty of this frozen landscape and delighted by your sightings of blue-eyed shags, cape petrels, crabeater seals, humpback, minke and killer whales. [B/L/D]
You'll board PolarCirkel boats and—depending on the weather—make a number of landings:
- Whaler's Bay, on Deception Island, with its warm springs and black volcanic sand.
- Half Moon Island, a crescent-shaped collection of islets sharing a sweep of shingle beach, is a rookery for chinstrap penguins, and home to kelp gulls, terns, skuas and sheathbills.
- Yankee Harbor, home to a variety of seals and an estimated 4,000 gentoo penguin pairs. It is a common feeding area for whales as well.
- Almirante Brown, in Paradise Harbor has glorious scenery of snowy peaks, ice cliffs and sculpted bergs.
- Port Lockroy, is one of the top tourist sites in Antarctica, as well as an important British base, where postcards postmarked "Antarctica" can be purchased.
- Neko Harbor's water has a fine mirror finish, flecked with bits of berg. There is an icy hush to the place, broken only by honking penguins and the rumble of glaciers calving into the sea.
- Petermann Island is inhabited by the southernmost colony of gentoo penguins, a rookery of Adélie penguins and blue-eyed shags.
- Cuverville Island, boasting the largest known colony of gentoo penguins in the Antarctic Peninsula.
- Wilhelmina Bay, feeding ground for whales and seals.
- Antarctic Sound, where huge, mile-long tabular icebergs can be seen. The sound is also home to an estimated half-million Adélie penguins as well as gentoo penguins, leopard seals, and killer whales.
- Brown Bluff, on the coast of the Antarctic Sound at the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. Adélie penguins, gentoo penguins, kelp gulls, and Cape petrels can be found here and Weddell seals are regular visitors.
Days 15-16: At Sea
During the crossing of Drake Passage, the lecture series will continue. [B/L/D]
Day 17: Ushuaia-Disembarkation-Buenos Aires
You'll disembark at the world's southernmost city. Transfer to the airport for your flight to Buenos Aires. Optional excursions. [B]
