Life’s a beach in San Diego, but we’ve places to go. Two laid-back days at sea, enjoying all that the ship has to offer, take us to Mexico and our first port of call, Puerto Vallarta. Here, the Sierra Madre mountains run down to golden beaches where gentle waves roll in from the Pacific. This place has all the attractions of a modern resort town while still feeling authentically Mexican – a stroll around its cobblestoned “romantic zone” is a must. More of Mexico awaits as we move on to Manzanillo, once used by trading ships as a shelter from pirates, and Zihuatenejo, where dolphins and turtles play in the waves. A day at sea takes us to Acajutla in El Salvador – be sure to try a coffee from one of the country’s famous plantations – and then tick off another Central American country, Nicaragua, at San Juan del Sur, known for its impressive surfing beaches. Costa Rica comes into view at Puntarenas, where there is seafood to dine on and nature to admire inland. A final relaxing day at sea delivers us to our destination, Fuerte Amador, gateway to Panama City.

day 1 | San Diego, California

San Diego is a vacationer's paradise, with year-round temperatures in the seventies and near-constant sunshine. One of America's most family-friendly cities, San Diego is home to LEGOLAND, the New Children's Museum, and the famous San Diego Zoo. Sunbathers and surfers are guaranteed to find their perfect beach, and foodies find delights in artisanal breweries, local bistros, and gourmet restaurants. From the Broadway excitement of La Jolla Playhouse to the European feel of Little Italy to the nouveau-chic of the Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego has something for everyone.

day 4 | Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is a resort town on Mexico’s Pacific coast, in Jalisco state. It is known for its beaches, water sports and nightlife scene. Its cobblestone center is home to the ornate Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe church, boutique shops and a range of restaurants and bars. El Malecón is a beachside promenade with contemporary sculptures, as well as bars, lounges and nightclubs.

As the principal seaport of El Salvador, Acajutla serves as a vital industrial engine where massive container ships dock against a backdrop of the sparkling Pacific Ocean. This historic coastal town offers visitors a unique blend of gritty maritime energy and relaxing seaside escapes, featuring popular seafood restaurants that serve the day’s freshest catch right by the water. This town is not on the Nicoya Peninsula, but rather on Costa Rica's mainland. It is best known as a cruise-ship port and launching pad for ferries heading southeast to the coast of the Nicoya Peninsula and for cruises sailing out on the Gulf of Nicoya. Puntarenas is also a major fishing port with a lively fish market. The town’s reputation suffers from the unimpressive parts you see from your car as you roll through town on the way to the ferry dock. But the town has a lot of character off the main drag, thanks to its illustrious past as an affluent port town and principal vacation spot for San José's wealthy, who arrived by train in the last century. Once the port was moved and roads opened to other beaches, Puntarenas's economy crashed, but it's making a comeback. Sitting on a narrow spit of sand—punta de arenas literally means "point of sand"—that protrudes into the Gulf of Nicoya, the town boasts a beautifully groomed, wide Blue Flag beach with views of the Nicoya Peninsula and spectacular sunsets, along with a public swimming pool, the San Lucas Beach Club, and a marine-life museum. Ticos arrive by bus and car to enjoy the beach and stroll the Paseo de los Turistas, a beachfront promenade lined with tree-shaded concrete benches and seafood restaurants. Crowds of locals, called porteños, cruise by on bicycles, the town’s most popular form of transport.

day 12 | Fuerte Amador

Panama City is a gleaming city of high rises on the Pacific and gracefully blends new and old. At once a rousing tribute to international finance and a rich reminder of a colonial past, it is Central America’s unparalleled cosmopolitan center. The atmospheric Old Town, the Casco Viejo, straddles a peninsula and hosts some of the nation’s most prized cultural and historic treasures, including churches, palaces and plazas. Nearby, one of the world’s greatest engineering feats, the Panama Canal, conveys ships along its 48 miles to the Caribbean Sea.
