Eleven days - a thousand memories!
Get close to the Norwegian nature and communities on board Havila's coastal express. Every single nautical mile along the coastal cruise from Bergen to Kirkenes and back is filled with new experiences. The mountains are immutable, but the weather and the light change constantly, transforming the colours and appearance of the landscape. Here, you will encounter the soft grey of the rain, the crackling green of the Northern Lights or the golden glow of the midnight sun. Along the coast, tiny fishing villages shelter from the fierce Atlantic breakers, while larger coastal towns nestle in the narrow space between wild mountains and the seashore.
*Geiranger visited 01.04–31.08. Hjørundfjorden visited 01.09-31.10
World Famous Fjords! There are hundreds of fjords along the Norwegian coast, and many of the ones we sail through are on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
Northern Lights above the Arctic Circle! From October to March, the Northern Lights dance in the sky in northern Norway, and you have the best chance of seeing them on dark, clear nights.
Exciting excursions! Get the most out of your trip by choosing from our varied programme of excursions. Maybe you have dreamt of catching a king crab, experiencing Lofoten or dog sledding under the Northern Lights?
Havila Voyages crowned best in cruise cuisine! Havila Voyages has been awarded the “Best Cuisine” title at this year’s Wave Awards, which is often called the "Oscars" of cruising.
The journey starts in Bergen, the capital of western Norway, with the colourful and UNESCO-listed warehouses in Bryggen. Take the funicular railway, Fløibanen, up to one of the lookout points, sample the seafood at the fish market or take a stroll through the narrow streets and along the quays of the lively harbour. Bergen is the gateway to the Norwegian fjords and the start of your coastal adventure.

It is morning when we dock in the historic city of Trondheim, which was founded over a thousand years ago. Nidaros Cathedral is the landmark of the city; it is Norway's national shrine and one of the largest cathedrals in Northern Europe. After our visit here, the voyage continues out into the fjord, into an abundant archipelago and heads for northern Norway.
On this stretch, we mark crossing the Arctic Circle with a ceremony and continue onward into the Arctic regions. It means midnight sun in the summer, while winter days are merely a shade less dark than night-time and, possibly, Northern Lights in the evenings. Nature is powerful with northern Scandinavia's largest glacier, the world's strongest tidal current and encounters with the majestic sea eagle. In the evening, Lofoten's fishing villages, steep mountains and Vikings await.
The voyage continues on through narrow fjords and past wild mountains to Tromsø, a city characterised by hunting and fishing, polar expeditions and courage. Now you have also reached the land of the Sami, Norway's indigenous people. Meeting the Sami and their reindeer while hearing about the Sami culture is a unique experience you will remember.
As far north as you can get - by land and sea. For many, the visit to the North Cape is a high point and a goal for voyages along the Norwegian coast. Up here in the polar landscape, nature is at its harshest and most desolate, but between bare plains and rugged cliffs people cling on and reap nature's bounty. You can also have a taste of the catch. How about some king crab?
You are now as far east on your voyage as you can go. The border with Russia is only a few kilometres away, and the road signs in Kirkenes are in Norwegian and Russian. You can go as far as the border on one of our excursions, or how about a visit to the Snowhotel where everything is made of ice and snow?
The polar landscape changes as we sail towards the west and south again. The great expanses are replaced by steep peaks, and in the evening we sail into Tromsø. You can take a stroll in the midnight sun or under the Northern Lights and explore the nightlife of the city dubbed "The Paris of the North".

We return to the wild, idyllic Lofoten Islands . Beneath the jagged mountains lie chalky white sandy beaches and fishing villages with a vibrant fishing industry and locals using the coastal ships for everyday trips and transport. If the weather permits, we will enter the narrow Trollfjord. There is a strong possibility of spotting sea eagles here.
Now we have come so far south that we're crossing the Arctic Circle and sailing away from the polar night and the sunlit nights. But you can still see the Northern Lights in the winter, and it is never completely dark during the summer nights. Here you sail past a myriad of small islands, islets and skerries and past the special mountain, Torghatten, which has a hole in the middle. If you wish, you can also go on the trip to the mountain and enter the hole.
Trondheim is Norway's third largest city, Norway's second oldest city and many consider it to be Norway's original capital city. The city's history dates back to 997 and is still the city of saints and kings. Trondheim is a lively student city with an intimate city centre, colourful wooden houses and small, independent shops in several charming districts. In addition, there is an emphasis on locally sourced food and locally brewed beer, which means that a visit here can be really tasty. On this 11 day cruise your voyage ends here. We hope to see you again soon!

Time: 18:30 - 20:30
Season: Autumn, Winter, Spring (10 Sep - 15 Apr)
Min/max persons: 8 - 50
The town of Vagar is often mentioned in written materials from medieval ages, such as sagas and other documents. It is most likely because the king and archbishop of the time needed to be in control of the important fishery. If it weren't for the presence of the authorities, little would have been written about the daily life among the people of Vagar.
The people of Lofoten have been fishing skrei (a codfish) since medieval times, and even back then, people from far and wide came to participate in the lucrative, but dangerous work in the hope of bringing dried fish (salt cod) home. Vágar was the town in which the fishermen sold some of their catch to merchants traveling from the cities of the south.
During your walk in the cultural landscape in Storvågan – which once held the biggest medieval settlement north of Trondheim – you will learn the history of the skrei, about the medieval town of Vágar, and about the people who lived off the sea.
Step into an authentic rorbu (seasonal house used by fishermen) from 1910 to get a deeper understanding of what was required from the fishermen of Lofoten back in the days.

One stormy winter night in 1904, a fire raged through Ålesund. By morning, 850 houses were in ruins and more than 10,000 people were homeless. In the course of a record-breaking three years, the town rose from the ashes. This is how Ålesund became an art nouveau city with a rare architectural expression.
The guide will meet you on the quay and take you on a short walk through the city centre before visiting and touring Jugendstilsenteret (the Art Nouveau Centre). Stroll back to your Havila Voyages ship.
No other city in Norway has so many art nouveau houses next to one another, and the city is renowned internationally for its architecture. There are towers and spires and flowering vines that twist along the buildings’ colourful facades wherever you turn. A guided city walk will give you an insight into Ålesund's history and its people, and art nouveau details will be pointed out.
The walk goes from Havila Voyages past the harbour with its fishing boats and pleasure boats and on to Apotekertorget (Pharmacy Square) where the city took shape almost 200 years ago. Here we visit the Jugendstilsenteret (the Art Nouveau Centre). Travel through time in the "From ashes to Art Nouveau" time machine, a multimedia exhibit that takes the audience back to the city fire in 1904.
We also visit a local artist in his studio. We continue along Borgundfjorden, which has traditional cod fishing before we return through Kongens gate, one of the most beautiful pedestrian streets in Norway, with sumptuously decorated house facades.

Time: 12:30 – 15:00
Meal: Coffee and the local pancake ("svele")
Level: 1
Season: Autumn, Sep. 1st – Oct. 31st
Min/max persons: 18 – 104
You'll see mountains, hidden valleys, and a lake with remnants of an old, submerged farm. Encounter historic mountain farms and learn about life and history in rural Norway.
A boat will pick you up in the Hjørundfjord and transfer you from the ship to the quay at Urke, where a bus awaits. The route takes you through Øye village, picturesque valleys, and charming mountain farms. Along the journey, discover rural Norwegian life with several informative stops. In fine weather, enjoy coffee and traditional “lefse” (a Norwegian kind of pancake) at Setervollen; otherwise, refreshments await at Urke. Dress appropriately for the weather.
The Hjørundfjord splits into two directions, and we follow the side known as the Norangsfjord. Here, steep mountains drop directly into the fjord. A narrow strip of land accommodates the road we travel on, flanked by a few scattered farms.
At the end of the Norangsfjord lies the village of Øye. A century ago, when the only access to this village was by sea, Øye transformed into a bustling hub for tourists. Royals and notable guests were among the first to explore this fjord, captivated by its beauty and allure. Adventurous mountain climbers also frequented the area.
As time passed, the Hjørundfjord and its surrounding valley have remained untouched by mainstream tourism. Today, it remains a tranquil haven, showcasing serene natural beauty and offering glimpses into authentic villages far from the typical tourist routes.
After transferring by boat from the Havila Voyages' ship, we reach the Urke quay and embark on our journey into Norangsdalen (The Norang Valley), making a stop at the picturesque Lyngdalsøyvatnet (lake). This location was historically the site of a summer mountain farm. However, a significant rockslide in 1908 obstructed the valley's river, forming a lake where the farm once stood. The foundations of the old farm buildings can still be seen beneath the water.
Our journey takes us further up this wild, scenic, and incredibly narrow valley — the narrowest in Norway accessible by road. While the area is not habitable in winter, several traditional summer farms dot the landscape. These are reminders of times when lower valley farmers sent their livestock up to graze during the warmer months.
One of these farms is Urasetra. Here, we follow an old cart path, which leads to historic buildings situated beside a charming mountain lake. Here, you will learn about the history of farming practices and the summertime life on these farms. If the weather permits, we'll enjoy coffee and lefse (a traditional Norwegian "pancake") in the meadow. Otherwise, we'll have refreshments at Urke before the tour concludes.
Leaving Urasetra, we head down the valley, stopping at another mountain farm, Stavbergsetra, where the buildings appear to cling to the rugged mountain cliffs.
Our journey continues along the fjord, taking us back through Urke, the starting point of our tour. As the central community spot, Urke is home to the only shopping store on this side of the fjord, serving the roughly 100 residents of both Øye and Urke.As our tour nears its end, we stop at the Lekneset ferry quay, offering views of both fjord branches. To wrap up, we make a brief stop in Urke, close to the store, power plant, and the vigorous Urke River, before the bus brings us back to the quay.

Torghatten has a naturally formed tunnel in the middle of the mountain, 12–15 metres wide, twice as high and 160 metres long. The hole was formed when the North American and European continental plates collided 600 million years ago, but while science tells us one thing, legends tell us something else.
According to one story, a brute of a troll fired an arrow at a girl who was running away from him. The king in one of the other mountains saw this and threw his hat in between so that the arrow went through the hat. Then the sun rose and as happens in legends, the sunlight turned the trolls to stone, just as it did with the seven sisters who lie like a mountain range close to Sandnessjøen.
On the walk up to Torghatten, you will learn more about this special mountain and the myths that have sprung up around the mountain with the hole.

The new route is a full-fledged alternative that passes through scenic areas via Sjøholt to Åndalsnes, with stops at Ørneveien, Kokarstein, Trollveggen, and Eggen restaurant. The change still offers fantastic experiences, spectacular views, and several stops along the way.
The adventure kicks off in Geiranger, ascending the serpentine Ørnesvingen ("Eagle turns") to a vantage point that presents a stunning view of the fjord. This spot allows for views of the gougers Seven Sisters waterfalls, the quaint village, and the majestic mountains that frame the scene.
We continue our journey through neat farmlands to Valldal, also called the strawberry village, where we catch a ferry across the fjord. Before heading up the mountains to Trollstigen, we stop to see the stunning Gudbrandsjuvet river rapids. At Trollstigen's peak, we take a break for coffee at a café with an incredible view.

The Romsdalsgondolen stands as Norway's inaugural gondola initiative grounded in sustainability, featuring an infrastructure that conceals water, power, and sewage systems within a borehole from the fjord to the summit, leaving the natural surroundings untouched. With no road access to the mountain top, the gondola serves as the sole mode of transport for both people and supplies. Moreover, Eggen Restaurant is designed with the future in mind, allowing for modifications or dismantlement by coming generations without harming the environment.

A walk that takes you into the life in the village with only a few dozen neighbours, hard work and nature for company. 2.5 kilometres guided walk through the small village with only 50 permanent residents. Wear good shoes and warm clothes.
About 50 years ago, the village of Urke had 350 inhabitants. Now there are barely 50 left. They have more than enough of both space and nature, and are happy to share it with whoever comes to visit.
The walk takes you through the village, and its varied business life, even if it has few inhabitants. Here you can find fish farming, horticulture and a small store owned by the villagers who also participate in it’s operation on a voluntary basis. The river through the village has given power to grind grain in the old days and an old mill house tells that history while a modern power plant provides power to 2000 households tells the modern story of the river.
Nature is the village's greatest resource, and Urke is the starting point for many beautiful summit hikes both summer and winter. The campsite in the village is much visited and if though there are only a few permanent residents in the village, then there are many who visits Urke as a holiday paradise meaning the population is much higher in the summer.

For over two decades, Tromsø's midnight concerts have been a sought-after attraction for tourists travelling the coastal route. Attendees are treated to a captivating concert in a candlelit church, introducing them to the cultural tapestry of Norwegian coastal communities. Built with timber from Måselv in Inner Troms in 1861, Tromsø Cathedral is a neo-Gothic, cross-shaped long church. Notably, it's Norway's sole wooden Protestant cathedral. This timber construction provides the church with pleasant acoustics, enhancing the midnight ambiance.
The musical repertoire provides a comprehensive journey through the annals of Norwegian and North Norwegian music, guided by skilled musicians. It features hymns, folk tunes, traditional Norwegian melodies, ballads, and Sami cultural pieces. Although the program may change seasonally, the depth and diversity of the musical experience remain consistent.
Relax, listen closely, and you might just feel the Arctic's pulse.

This is the toughest winter adventure, a frozen fjord and one of the giants of the sea. The bus takes you from the quay to the base to get changed and receive safety instructions. You are driven out to the ice with a snowmobile and sled where you pull crab pots with local fishermen. Feast on king crab at the local fjord restaurant before the bus takes you back to the quay.

Meal: Generous servings of king crab
Season: Winter (1 Dec - 20 Apr)

Several hundred metres below the fjord's layer of ice, the king crab moves along on its long claws and legs. At most, this crab can grow up to two metres from pincer to pincer. With their giant legs, they move about down in the icy darkness before some of them are lured into the pots waiting for you to haul them up onto the ice.
You are transported out to this adventure by snowmobile and sled and to a warm, rustic restaurant to taste the catch.
The dark red, spiky shell of the king crab hides a soft, almost sweet, completely white meat. Many people prefer it to lobster. And here you get it served in the classic Norwegian way: fresh, juicy and irresistible. Portion sizes are on the generous side, so no one should leave the table hungry.

Here it was the women who ruled and when you go back down again, send a thought to the girls who took the same trip with a heavy load of milk on their shoulders.
On the hike up there is a magnificent view of the Hjørundfjorden's fjord arms and pointed mountains. You will visit two farms and with your spirits lifted from the hike enjoy a coffee break on the farm, surrounded by rugged peaks.

Situated near the Russian and Finnish borders, Kirkenes is a diverse town where the Eastern neighbours and the Sami culture in the northern hemisphere interweave in the fabric of everyday life.
Kirkenes is a cultural kaleidoscope, marked by distinctive weather patterns and seasonal variations. Winters here are known for their longevity, characterized by snowfall and the mesmerizing dance of the Northern Lights. Conversely, summers are brief yet vibrant, punctuated by the extraordinary phenomenon of the midnight sun.
This bus tour introduces you to the nuanced local and international history of Kirkenes, including a stop at Andersgrotta. Given its strategic geographical position, Kirkenes experienced significant bombardment during World War II, becoming one of the most heavily bombed towns worldwide. Andersgrotta, the town's largest bomb shelter, now showcases a film that portrays the harrowing experiences of seeking refuge within its confines during wartime.
Additionally, the tour encompasses visits to various monuments and statues throughout Kirkenes, notably the Russian Monument. This monument serves as a memorial to the Red Army that liberated Sør-Varanger in the autumn of 1944.
Another noteworthy stop is the picturesque viewpoint that offers a panoramic view of the entire Kirkenes town, an ideal spot for capturing memorable photos. However, the tour's highlight for many is the thrilling stop at the Russian border, where you'll find yourself mere meters away from the imposing Eastern neighbour.

Where warm and cold ocean currents meet outside the small fishing village of Gjesvær, the sea becomes a nutritious larder. The birds that nest on the 283 m high island close by know this, so it has become one of the largest bird cliffs in Norway.
A short boat ride from the pier brings you close to the cliffs that are teeming with bird life. If you bring binoculars, you will be able to see a large number of different bird species at close quarters. Seals playing in the water or resting on rocks and reefs is a fairly common sight also.

Experience “The Queen’s route” by electric bike, you cycle under majestic mountains, in the footsteps of royals and through an area ruled by natural forces.
24 kilometres of cycling on a paved road with plenty of assistance from the batteries in the electric bike. The excursion is divided in two cycling sessions with in approximately one hour. Bicycles and helmets are available in different sizes suited to the cyclist. Participants should wear warm and windproof clothing adapted to the weather conditions. Participants must be at least twelve years old.
With their beautiful mountains, Hjørundfjorden and Norangsdalen have fascinated Europe's royals and nobles, adventurers and celebrities. Norangsdalen is said to have been visited by seven queens, and the narrow road that winds its way under the steep mountains is often called the queen’s route.
Here you cycle on a rural road with little traffic giving you plenty of time to admire thewild mountains and traces of the ravages of nature. You can also see the small farmhouses, built wall to wall and almost into the ground, to withstand the avalanches in the area. In Lyngstøylvatnet you can see the remains of the old road, the foundations of the farmhouses and the gateway that is now submerged in the crystal clear water after the mountainside collapsed in a landslide in 1908, closed off the valley and dammed up the river.
In winter, the road is often closed due to snow and the risk of landslides, but the excursion is available when it is safe, and you get to experience the magnificent nature that has attracted European guests for over a hundred years and how the locals adapted to the challenging forces of nature.

The Norwegian coastal route includes 34 ports of call, ranging from vibrant cities like Ålesund and Tromsø to remote villages accessible only by sea. While some stops are brief (15–30 minutes), allowing for quick transfers and deliveries, others offer extended visits, providing opportunities for excursions and exploration.
Many ports are visited on both the northbound and southbound journeys, but at different times of the day, ensuring a varied and unique experience in each direction.
Norwegian coastal cruises operate as a working coastal route, serving both travelers and locals. The ships follow a strict, continuous schedule, running day and night to efficiently connect 34 ports along the Norwegian coast.
Short stops (15–30 minutes): Many ports serve as quick drop-off points for cargo and passengers, so stops are brief.
Longer stops (1–6 hours): Major ports, such as Tromsø, Ålesund, and Kirkenes, allow more time for excursions and sightseeing.
24/7 Operations: The ships sail continuously, with passengers boarding and disembarking at different locations along the route.
Your fare typically includes:
Accommodation in your chosen cabin category
Full-board meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner)
Coastal transport between ports
Access to onboard facilities (lounges, observation decks, and libraries)
Excursions, beverages, and premium dining options may require an additional fee.
Full board meals are included in the cruise fare for journeys longer than 5 nights.
à la carte dining experience featuring high-quality, locally sourced Norwegian cuisine. Instead of buffets, guests enjoy multi-course meals with a focus on sustainability and fresh ingredients.

Winter (November–March): Northern Lights, snowy landscapes.
Spring (April–May): Blooming fjords, fewer tourists.
Summer (June–August): Midnight Sun, warmest temperatures, best wildlife sightings.
Autumn (September–October): Dramatic fall colors, good chances of Northern Lights.
Yes! The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) are visible from late September to March, especially above the Arctic Circle. Some cruises even offer a Northern Lights Guarantee, meaning a free voyage if you don’t see them.

Yes, Wi-Fi is available but can be slow or intermittent, especially in remote areas.
Unlike traditional cruise ships, Norwegian coastal cruises focus on nature and exploration rather than entertainment. Instead of casinos and shows, you'll find:
Lectures and storytelling sessions
Cultural and historical presentations
Photography and wildlife spotting opportunities

Spring (February–April): Days lengthen rapidly, with 8–16 hours of daylight, depending on the month.
Summer (May–July): The Midnight Sun shines above the Arctic Circle, meaning 24 hours of daylight in the north and very long days further south.
Autumn (August–October): Days start getting shorter, with 16 hours of daylight in early autumn and around 6–8 hours by late October.
