ITINERARY

Jul 16    Tromso, Norway    Depart: 5:00PM

Not only will you witness magnificent fjords and glaciers throughout Tromsø, Norway, but you will also immerse yourself in a sophisticated cultural life and architectural delights. A superb example of blending the built environment with the natural setting is the Arctic Cathedral, an architectural marvel made up of aluminum-coated concrete panels, making it a stunning façade resembling an iceberg. To see the real icebergs, all you have to do is take the Fjellheisen cable car 1,525 feet above sea level for incredible views of the Norwegian fjords. You can also stroll around the Arctic-Alpine Botanical Garden, visit the Science Centre of Northern Norway or gain new knowledge at the city’s museums including the Polar Museum, Tromsø University Museum, and Perspektivet Museum.

Jul 17    Bjornoya (Bear Island), Norway   Arrive: 4:00PM Depart: 6:30PM

Bjørnøya (Bear Island) is the southernmost island of the Svalbard archipelago, halfway between Norway and Spitsbergen. Bear Island was discovered by the Dutch explorers Willem Barentsz and Jacob van Heemskerck in 1596. It was named after a polar bear that was seen swimming nearby. The Russian Pomors came to Bjørnøya to hunt in the late 1700s and left several remains of houses and grave sites for present-day and future explorers to find. The oldest kept hunting cabin in Svalbard, the Hammerfest House, was built in 1822. Despite its remote location and barren nature, there are personnel working at the island’s meteorological station Herwighamna.

Jul 18    Trygghamma, Alkhornet, Svalbard, Norway   Arrive: 1:30PM Depart: 6:00PM

The name Trygghamna means safe haven, and it really is. This harbor offers great anchorage for an adventure ashore. If you step foot on this land, you’ll find the rocks here date back millennia. Over on Alkhornet, there are fantastic limestone formations that capture your imagination. Avid birders will be busy looking up toward the mountain’s cliffs, as this area was designated as an Important Bird Area by Birdlife International for its more than 10,000 breeding pairs of seabirds. Below the cliffs the mossy tundra provides lush grazing grounds for reindeer and Arctic foxes.

Jul 19    lillihooek Galcier, Signehamna, Norway   Arrive: 8:00AM Depart: 12:30PM

One of the largest glacial fronts in Svalbard is Lilliehöök Glacier, which makes for spectacular navigation around the small icebergs. Beluga whales are ever present in these nutrient rich waters, so keep an eye out for the white fins. Much of Svalbard’s coastline is dotted with interesting history, especially in Signehamna. It was a weather station secretly erected by the Germans at the height of World War II. Eventually it was bombed by the Norwegians and has been reduced to nothing more than rusted barrels, rubber boots and trunks long beyond repair. It remains as a somber reminder of the far-reaches of this war, even in the most remote corners.
CAPTAIN’S CHOICE – Captain’s Choice ports of call add to the sense of adventure and an element of surprise. Your ship’s master will sail around changing weather conditions as needed and take you to the best areas for wildlife viewing.

Jul 20    Monacobreen, Texas Bar, Norway   Arrive: 8:00AM Depart: 12:30PM

Liefdefjorden, or “The Love Fjord,” is the western arm of the Woodfjord, its entirety of which is located inside the Northwest Spitsbergen National Park. At the head of the fjord is the stunning Monacobreen glacier. Before you see Moancobreen, you may be able to hear it. Named to honor the first Prince Albert of Monaco, a pioneering polar explorer of the early 20th century, this immense glacier flows into the far end of the Liefdefjorden. When ice calves off the cliff and into the ocean, the sound can be heard for miles around. Imposing icebergs floating in the middle of the fjord are the result of this.

Jul 21    Mushamna, Norway   Arrive: 8:00AM Depart: 12:00PM

Your itinerary includes a call on the bay of Mushamna. This icy body of water is on the east side of Woodfjord on the north coast of Spitsbergen. The bay is actually a lagoon that is separated from the fjord by a long, narrow gravel bar. Luckily, your ship is just the right size to enter and find a sheltered docking point. On your landing, you may be able to reach a couple of huts north of Mushamna. The most eye-catching one is a large trapper hut built in solid log-cabin style. In this environment, it may seem like a luxurious mansion compared to other trapper huts.

Jul 22    Alkekongen, Norway   Arrive: 8:00AM Depart: 12:30PM

In this untouched and remote region, it may seem like time is frozen as the white and blue glaciers. You are sure to appreciate every moment in this region where so few have ventured, including Alkekongen. Magdalenefjorden is in the northwestern part of Spitsbergen, about the first part of the island that was discovered by Dutch explorer Willem Barents during his famed voyage in 1596. Less than two decades later, Englishman Robert Fotherby claimed the fjord. Here you can also view a surprising variety of wildlife, especially in the coves and cliffs sheltering thousands of birds.

Jul 23    Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway   Arrive: 8:00AM

Longyearbyen is in a valley on the shores of the idyllic Adventfjord, surrounded by steep mountains and several glaciers. There are only around 25 miles of roads in this village, which is divided into several neighborhoods, including the town center and Nybyen (New Town), which consists of charming miners’ barracks constructed after the war, as well as guest houses, a restaurant and gallery, and not to mention beautiful views of the landmark mountain, Hiorthfjellet. Be sure to visit the Svalbard museum as a break between the plethora of activities like summer dogsledding or cruising to the abandoned Russian city of Pyramiden
